Research Essay Final Draft

As a requirement for English, I am turning in my research paper” How Social Media Affects Mental Health. This essay addresses a pressing issue in modern culture by exploring the complex relationship between social media use and its consequences on people’s mental health.

My objective has been to investigate the complex ways that social media platforms affect the state of mental health, especially for young adults and adolescents, ever since this study began. My goals have been to perform in-depth research, critically evaluate the body of existing literature, and provide a full analysis that advances our knowledge of this complicated problem.

This assignment demonstrated how language may be tailored to different audiences. Using language with flexibility is necessary to create academically competent and widely accessible content. This flexibility is essential for successful communication in various settings. A sense of inclusivity is promoted by using language that is friendly to readers with different backgrounds and levels of experience. One way to reduce obstacles to understanding difficult subjects is through the use of inclusive language.

The information provided in this essay, in my opinion, will be useful to educators, parents, and other professionals who are interested in the welfare of people in the digital era, in addition to my peers. In order to make the essay appealing to a larger audience, I used persuasive components. This includes stressing the importance it is to treat mental health issues brought on by social media use. The goal of persuasive rhetoric was to make readers feel sympathetic and concerned. This strategy seeks to emotionally connect with readers in order to foster a deeper level of interaction with the material.

Writing this essay, I gained a lot of meaningful insights regarding language, and literacy. I have learned a great deal about the complex relationships that exist between using social media and mental health consequences. I now know how to summarize difficult material, assess research papers objectively, and make a compelling case that sparks more thought and conversation.

Being literate in the digital age means knowing how to navigate tricky online spaces, interpret digital content, and assess information critically. Writing and reading are just two aspects of literacy; other skills include comprehending and interacting with a variety of media.    Examining social media’s effects illuminated the difficulties associated with digital literacy. A crucial component of modern literacy is the capacity to interact critically with online content, separate reliable information from false information, and use digital platforms. In order to advance digital literacy education, it is essential to comprehend these difficulties.

This assignment reaffirmed the idea that using narrative to effectively deliver complex material may be quite effective. Including a gripping story in the study aids in capturing readers’ attention both mentally and emotionally. It makes it possible to communicate research findings in an approachable and understandable way.

I have significantly improved my comprehension of language, rhetoric, and the complexities of current topics by finishing the research essay on the impact of social media on mental health and meeting many course learning objectives. One course learning outcome that is relevant to this assignment is “Recognize & practice key rhetorical terms & strategies when engaged in writing situations”. The essay’s research and composition required careful attention to detail in the identification and use of important rhetorical phrases. For example, decisions on language, style, and arrangement were directed by knowledge of the rhetorical situation. The awareness of the diverse audience led to a purposeful use of pathoes, ethos, and logos to strengthen the essay’s persuasive components.

In the past few years, social media has become an integral part of our daily lives, influencing how we communicate, share information, and get in touch with others. Navigating this multifaceted digital landscape requires a deeper understanding of the complexities of the interplay between the balance of social media and mental well-being. Although its influence is very widespread, it raises concerns about the effect it may have on mental health over time, especially among adolescents. This essay will discuss the controversial effects of social media on people’s mental well-being, looking at the advantages, disadvantages, and as well as discussing strategies to minimize the harmful negative effects of social media, such as limiting usage and taking time away from the screen.

As much as social media has many downsides, there are also many upsides as well. These include improving health, reducing loneliness, increasing voter participation, facilitating political change, reducing social stigmas, providing academic research to a wider audience, and improving overall well-being. Social media allows people to connect with each other from across the world, allowing them to form meaningful and supportive relationships (31 Eye-Opening Pros and Cons of Social Media Use). This helps to reduce loneliness and isolation, which can lead to improved mental health. Social media can be used to create a more engaged democracy, as it allows citizens to participate in the political process and allows marginalized communities to share their stories and advocate for change more easily. According to the article ‘The Social Media and Mental Health Connection’ it states “Social media has a tendency to reinforce its use. People quickly become hooked on checking their statuses for comments and likes, as well as perusing other people’s posts. Using social media sometimes activates the brain’s reward center by releasing dopamine, also known as the feel-good chemical. This dopamine release, in turn, keeps people coming back because they want to repeat those feel-good experiences.” (The Social Media and Mental Health Connection). This is likely due to the instant gratification that social media provides, which is similar to the way that people become addicted to drugs or gambling. The release of dopamine is a reward that encourages people to keep using social media, even if it’s not beneficial to their mental health.

Like a double-edged sword, there are also disadvantages to social media Social media has the potential to become a toxic environment, where users compare themselves to other users and feel like they need to post only the best versions of themselves. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and depression. Social media can also be a place of cyberbullying, where people can post negative comments about others or spread false information. According to The American Psychological Association (APA), researchers have found that racism is built into social media platforms and that this can lead to physical violence and threats to well-being. This is because social media users are constantly comparing themselves to others and feeling like they have to meet certain standards in order to be accepted. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and depression as users feel like they don’t measure up (Health Advisory: Adolescent Social Media Use). Racism on social media can lead to physical violence and threats to well-being as users engage in hate speech or spread false information. Social media can be a place where people feel the pressure to conform to certain standards, which can lead to people feeling inadequate or like they don’t measure up. Furthermore, it can lead to people feeling exposed to criticism and judgment, which can further exacerbate feelings of depression and anxiety. The association has also found that the algorithms used by social media platforms often prioritize certain content, which can lead to the spread of false information and misinformation. This can be damaging to a person’s mental health and can also lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation (The Social Media and Mental Health Connection). Social media can also have a detrimental effect on relationships, as users may spend too much time on social media at the expense of spending time with family, and friends even at the expense of other important activities.

The debate surrounding social media’s impact on mental health is further complicated by the lack of conclusive research. Due to the fact that there is a lack of conclusive evidence, it is difficult to determine the exact cause of the increased mental health issues associated with social media. It is difficult to measure the impact of social media on mental health due to the complexity of factors such as the amount of time spent on social media, the type of content consumed, and the context in which it is used. Another problem we run into when we look at data is that it can be a challenge to isolate the effects of social media on mental health from the other factors that may be contributing to mental health issues, such as genetics, family dynamics, and the environment. Some other factors could be that it can be difficult to draw conclusions from studies on social media because it can pose a challenge to accurately measure the amount of time spent on each platform, the type of content consumed, and the context in which it is used. With this, it can be difficult to distinguish between correlation and causation, as some research has found that those who suffer from mental health issues are more likely to use social media, but this does not mean that social media is the cause of mental health issues. A 2018 University of Pennsylvania study found that cutting down social media use to 30 minutes a day can improve mental health (Social Media and Mental Health). This suggests that while there may be a correlation between social media and mental health issues, it does not necessarily mean that social media is the cause of mental health issues. Rather, it indicates that reducing social media use may be an effective way to reduce the chances of developing mental health issues. There are many ways to reduce the amount of time such as using an app to track how much time you spend on social media each day, turning off your phone at certain times of the day, disabling social media notifications, and limiting checks to once every 15 minutes, once every 30 minutes, and once an hour.

An ABC News report investigated whether social media negatively impacts the mental health of teens and why?” The video “Does social media negatively impact teen mental health?” by ABC News highlights that “two things that happen at the same time are not causally related to one another, so we can’t make causal statements as scientists” The video attempts to explain the complexity of the relationship between social media and mental health, recognizing that while there may be an association between the two, more research is needed to understand the full effects of social media on mental health. They also go on to say “In a recent CDC study from 2011 to 2021, when social media use was booming, the percentage of teen girls who reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness increased by nearly 60 percent. It’s hard to do an experiment that fully captures the effect of Facebook and all of the network effects where being on Facebook affects my friends. It’s just really hard to study if we don’t want to wait until we have the most conclusive proof that demonstrates with causality what the harms will be because the time that it takes for science to do that kind of work will lose an entire generation or two…” (ABC NEWS), because Facebook is majority skewed towards the older generation the studies don’t represent the younger generations and the impacts of social media on a developing mind. This means that by the time we have conclusive proof that social media is harmful, the younger generation will have already experienced most of its negative impacts, and it will be too late to do anything about it.

Social media can increase anxiety and depression, as well as loneliness and a sense of social isolation. This can be particularly dangerous for young people, who are still developing their mental and social health. The damage done by social media may be more difficult to undo as the younger generations become more dependent on it, leading to risky behavior, such as oversharing personal information or engaging with strangers. As well as, having a negative impact on creativity and productivity, as users are more likely to spend time on social media than working on projects. In her Ted Talk titled “Is Social Media Hurting Your Mental Health?”, Bailey Parnell explores the unintended consequences of social media on mental well-being. Drawing from her own experience of disconnecting from social media during a four-day vacation, Parnell unveils the eye-opening realization of the detrimental impact that social media can have on our mental health. She identifies four primary stressors associated with social media usage: the Highlight Reel, Social Currency, Fear of Missing Out (FOMO), and Online Harassment. The constant exposure to idealized portrayals, the pursuit of online validation, FOMO-induced anxiety, and the prevalence of cyberbullying contribute to the negative effects on mental health. Parnell concludes her talk by providing practical strategies for using social media in a healthy way. These include recognizing the problem, auditing social media habits, and crafting a positive online experience by curating one’s online connections. In the process, they model positive behavior both online and offline. She emphasizes the importance of treating others with respect in both the digital and physical realms. While acknowledging the power of social media for connection and communication, Parnell highlights the necessity for mindful usage to mitigate potential negative effects on mental health. By following Parnell’s recommendations, individuals can cultivate a healthier and more positive relationship with social media.

In conclusion, the debate surrounding social media’s effects on mental health is complex and multifaceted. While acknowledging the positive aspects of social media, it is crucial to remain vigilant about the potential risks, especially concerning adolescents and children. Social media and mental health conversations continue to evolve, urging society to adopt a balanced and informed approach to its use. It is important to recognize that while social media can provide feelings of connection and community, it can also lead to feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression. With that being said social media can also be used to manipulate individuals or spread false information, potentially leading to further mental health issues. Therefore, it is important to be aware of the potential dangers of social media and be proactive about protecting oneself. All in all, it is essential to be mindful of the potential dangers of social media and to use it responsibly in order to make the most of its positive aspects.
